Thank you. This course has been life changing for me for relaxing, being grounded and engaging and so much more for being present and staying in the present. The learning has been terrific. Today’s class was phenomenal!

Guo Gu is an outstanding teacher. His depth of knowledge of the subject matter, gained from years in monastic life and academic study, gives him the credibility to speak with unquestioned authority. But just as important is his ability to convey the course material in a manner that is easily absorbed both by practicing Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.

Thanks for this wonderful class, my first regarding Buddhism.  I’ve read Guo Gu's The Essence of Chan and have another book on the list on the way.  I look forward to learning much more, taking advantage of your website and meeting in person some day.

What is Chan?

Chan is freedom, expressed through wisdom and compassion.

Awakening in Chan means the direct experience of being freed from self-referentiality and vexations. Buddhism articulates this freedom as the wisdom of emptiness (śūnyatā), which means everything is interdependent, connected, and viewed with compassion. This gives rise to selfless activity, the ability to connect with everyone and everything.

Chan as practice means grounding and engaging. Grounding means facing, embracing, working through, and letting go of the self. Engaging means offering oneself to the benefit of others. Through this practice, all the ups and downs of life become part of the path.

Chan is also a school within East Asian Buddhism, with a history dating back to 7th century CE in China. Later this form of Buddhism was transmitted to Japan as “Zen” in the 13th century.

Lotus Sutra Discussion Group by Fran Berry

Every Thursday (unless otherwise noted), 7:00-8:30pm, via Zoom

The Lotus Sutra is a central Mahayana Buddhist scripture that teaches the universality of Buddhahood and the compassionate skillful means of the Buddha. It emphasizes that all beings possess the potential to attain enlightenment, revealing that earlier teachings were provisional steps toward this ultimate truth. Through parables and vivid imagery, it portrays the Buddha’s eternal nature and his ongoing guidance of all beings. The sutra encourages faith, devotion, and compassionate action, presenting enlightenment as accessible to everyone.
